Melissa Banczak has lived all over the country, thanks to her now-retired military spouse. She currently resides in Florida, where she’s a reasonable driving distance to roller coasters in the Orlando area. An unexpected encounter with her daughter’s nine foot boa, Strawberry Margarita, led to the idea for the first book in her June Nash Misadventure series. When she’s not writing, she and her husband run. Slowly. She accidentally completed her first marathon in 2017, when she didn’t hear her husband ask if she’d like to stop at 13.1. She would have. Remember those awkward teenage years? This week on the show, I’m chatting with YA author Paige Lavoie about her novel Confidence: Diary of an Invisible Girl. Plus comics. And Star Wars. And a whole lot more. Check out this great show and don’t forget to comment.
Or if you prefer to listen, check out the podcast.
I’m back on my feet after two months of that crappy cough that was going around. I had it twice. Or probably never got rid of it the first time.
Was a long day of writing so my mind is fried. How to Square Your Grouper will be out soon. I’m off to bed. Go read a good book.
No interview this week. I do have photos from my visit to the new ride in Disneyworld Star Wars land – Star Wars Rise of the Resistance. Just click the video above!
This is going out on January 2, 2020. Anyone break their resolutions yet?
Me in the ride queue. I have lots of other great photos, but my computer keeps putting everything in the cloud and then won’t let me have it back. I hate technology.
I guess my resolution should be, get better acquainted with technology. But it’s just easier to imagine smashing things with a hammer and then asking one of my kids to do the tech stuff for me. (none are around right now. Blast.)
I found a perfect white elephant gift. A week after the party. Maybe next year.
And that’s it for me. I just don’t know how I can top that. See you next time. Go read a good book.
Between battling a cough that won’t die and working on the next two June Nash books, I have sucked at writing fun blog posts that have nothing to do with my podcast. But I hope to get back to those after the new year.
In the meantime – seriously, this week’s show is fantastic. I loved chatting with Kayla. If you like romance books, you will enjoy this week’s show and want to get all her books.
19 days left in the year. Anyone else hustling to finish things? I’m burning the midnight oil working to get my next June Nash Misadventure to my editor. It must happen next week. It must. I still have Christmas shopping to start.
If you’re still looking for gifts, check out the Books Cubed Podcast this week. I revisit my chats with Laura Boldin-Fournier – she wrote the delightful children’s book, An Orangutan’s Night Before Christmas, and Carrie Pack who features children in her horror story, The Lights. I ended up going to the tree lightening that she talked about in her book and I spent the whole time keeping an eye on all the kids, thinking, it would happen….
Anybody else have a horrible cough? Mine has been kicking my ass for almost three weeks. I’m up off the couch which is good and slowly getting my fingers back to the keyboard. I’ve got just a few chapters left on book two in the June Nash MisAdventure series and I’m beyond ready to get this baby out in the world.
chapter 7 from book one is up on this week’s Books Cubed podcast. Just click the video above or listen to the podcast.
Just before I got sick, I hit the theater for a preview of Knives Out. Daniel Craig, a very under used Jamie Lee Curtis, Chris Even, who excels at being a real dick, and so many more. The film starts out a bit slow – there’s some questioning of the suspects, but then it dives in and pulls you along. You think you have it figured out and then wham – it becomes a puzzle inside a puzzle. I need to go back for another viewing before it leaves the theater.
That’s it for this week, I’m gonna hit the hay. Stay healthy and go read a good book.
Writers, is your imagination stuck? Tired of staring at a blank page? Looking for a new way into your stories? You’re in luck! Roll-A-Prompt Writing Journals, which I co-authored are the topic today. Sets of elements plus the roll of a dice = more than 6000 writing prompts per book.6 in all. 5 genres, plus a mashup. Three authors have bravely joined us today. They’ll each roll for a prompt from the same set of elements and then write while Lisa and I chat about the books. At the end, you’ll get to hear what they came up with.
And you can join in the fun. Below, I’ve included the set of elements we used. Give it a try and let us know what you think.
Melissa & Lisa
Even if you don’t read either genre, you need to follow Linda on facebook just for her photos of itty bitty and giant dog.
What’s new with me? Ahhhh. I may have given myself too much to do this month. I’m final drafting book 2 of the June Nash Misadventure series, I’m first drafting book three (same series) and book one in a new horror series, and I’m at the formatting stage for the 6 book non fiction series I co-authored. I’ll have more on that for one of the shows this month. I just need to finish lining up the guest stars. It will probably coincide with the Amazon release of the series. (Non river lovers – I’ll start releasing it on additional retailers shortly thereafter)
That’s it. My mind must be fried, I just spent several minutes trying to think of the word retailer. I need to go take the dog for a walk and get some fresh air. It’s already been a 9 hour day and I’m not done.
And as I always say on my show, let me know what you’re reading! My kindle is almost bare.
Read John’s books – they’re currently in Kindle Unlimited. (Oct 2019)
It’s almost NaNoWriMi. – November 1 marks the start of National Novel Writing Month. Authors write a 50k word book in 30 days. This year, I’m going big. I’ll be working on the first draft of the third book in the June Nash Mystery series (about to be rebranded mysteries) Getting down the basics for a new horror series, and gosh darn it releasing the 2nd June Nash book – How to Square Your Grouper. How the heck am I getting it all done? Thanks for asking. My editor introduced me to this great guy Winston.
Actually, Winston is a typewrite app for mac complete with clackity clack noises and carriage return bells. Best part? You can’t go backwards. If you hit the return key, it Xs out whatever was there. So, no revisions. Revisions are my downfall. And the reason it takes me so long to finish a project. I think all that’s going to change with Winston. Today marks day 8 and I’m just under 9000 words. With no revisions! I’m not even going to look at any of it until I hit finish my words on day 30. Then I’ll switch to my editing program and hopefully make June Nash a three book series by my birthday. (April) Or sooner.
That’s it for this week. I’ll be back next time with another interview and news about a 6 book non fiction series that I co-authored.
Go read a good book!
~~What do I write? Thanks for asking.

This week on the show, I chat with Tom Fowler author of the CT Ferguson Mystery series. Classic mystery with modern cyber intrigue.
Is almost Halloween, which means Christmas is just around the corner. What’s everybody asking Santa for this year? I’d love for one of the elves to find the mouse that keeps chewing up the seats in my car. I park in the driveway so I figure the little devil smelled the BBQ sauce packets my kid left under a seat. Many glue traps (useless) snap traps (I was the only one tripping them) and a bug bomb later, it might be gone. I hope. We’ll see tomorrow.
Last week, I thought I’d be turning in a new manuscript, How to Square Your Grouper, to my editor by this past Monday but…..I realized I’m not quite done messing with June. The manuscript is getting closer every day and I know it will go to Lisa sometime in the next ten or so days.
On Books Cubed this week, I’m chatting with suspense author Lori Flynn about her new book, I love You to Pieces plus book recommendations.
